Kavanur lies on the western edge of the Chennai metropolitan area in Tamil Nadu, in a belt of towns that has changed quickly as the city has grown. Its map shows that change. There are older village lanes, newer residential layouts with regular plots, and main roads carrying traffic between the suburbs and the city to the east.
Water shapes this part of Tamil Nadu. Traditional tanks, known locally as eris, collect the monsoon rain. The large Chembarambakkam reservoir, one of Chennai's main sources of drinking water, lies close by. On a poster these bodies of water become broad, smooth shapes that break up the street pattern and give the composition a sense of scale.
