Kenema is the largest city in Sierra Leone's Eastern Province and one of the most important urban centres in the country. It lies at the foot of the Kambui Hills, which are covered by forest reserve, and on the map these hills form a green, empty edge on one side of the city. The streets spread out across lower ground in a mix of regular and irregular patterns.
The city is known as a centre of trade in the region, particularly linked to diamonds and agricultural products such as timber, coffee and cocoa. Main roads lead out toward Bo and other towns in the east. From above, Kenema's layout shows a busy commercial centre surrounded by residential districts that thin out toward the hills and farmland.
