Khulayş lies in the Mecca Region of western Saudi Arabia, inland from the Red Sea coast and north of Jeddah. It is the centre of a governorate known for farming, with fields watered from wells in the wide valley that runs through the area. On a map the town is a scatter of blocks and walled plots rather than a single dense core, laid out across level, open ground.
Roads make the strongest shapes. Main routes run long and straight across the plain, and the residential districts along them follow the rectilinear blocks typical of newer Saudi towns. Toward the edges, farm plots form neat rectangles of cultivated land, and dry watercourses leave faint, branching traces where the map is detailed enough to show them.
