Kilju sits inland in North Hamgyong, in the northeast of North Korea, where steep mountains cover most of the land. From above, the town fits into a valley floor, with its streets and buildings following the line of the river and the main road. Farm fields fill the flatter ground nearby, and the slopes around the valley stay mostly empty on the map.
The town is the seat of Kilju County, a mountainous area that most outsiders know only through news reports about the region. Few detailed descriptions of the town itself are publicly available, and the map shows it as a modest valley settlement with a rail line and roads connecting it to the coast and to other towns in the province.
