Koothanallur lies in Tiruvarur district, Tamil Nadu, in the heart of the Cauvery delta. This is some of the flattest and most thoroughly watered land in southern India. On a map the town is surrounded by a fine net of distributary rivers, irrigation canals and paddy fields that stretch in every direction toward neighbouring villages.
The town's streets form a dense, irregular core, with older lanes near places of worship and newer houses spreading along the roads out of town.
