Kortrijk lies in West Flanders, on the Leie River close to the French border. From above, the river runs through the city from southwest to northeast, with the historic centre on its southern bank and a ring road encircling the whole central area.
Inside the ring, streets converge on the Grote Markt, and the dense medieval core contrasts with the broader modern districts beyond. A Kortrijk map poster shows this clear structure, with the Leie's straight, canalised stretches and bridges linking the two sides of the city.
