Kudus lies on the flat north coast plain of Central Java, inland from the Java Sea, with the volcanic mass of Mount Muria rising to the north. On a map the town has an older core of close, irregular lanes. Newer districts spread along the main roads, and rice fields surround the whole settlement.
The town grew around the mosque of Sunan Kudus, one of the Wali Songo credited with spreading Islam in Java. Its brick minaret, Menara Kudus, is built in a style that recalls Hindu-Javanese temple architecture. The narrow streets of the old quarter cluster near it, and a Kudus map poster shows this dense historic district clearly against the wider, more regular streets beyond.
Kudus is also the centre of Indonesia's kretek industry, the clove cigarettes whose makers have long been based here. Factory sites occupy large plots along the main roads. From above, the town combines an old religious centre, an industrial belt and farmland, with the slopes of Muria rising at the northern edge.
