Kunnamkulam lies in Thrissur district in central Kerala, a short distance inland from the Arabian Sea coast. Its map is not a grid. Roads fan out from a central market area and wander between plots, following old footpaths and the gentle rise and fall of the land, so the town looks more woven than planned.
Around the centre, dense building quickly gives way to coconut groves, house compounds and patches of paddy. On a black-and-white print this shows as a firm knot of streets surrounded by a looser web of lanes that thins out toward the fields. Small ponds and temple tanks add the occasional solid shape.
The town has long been known as a trading centre and for its role in Kerala's printing and publishing history. It is also home to a long-established Christian community, with churches that stand out as landmarks in the town.
