Lagoa Real is a municipality in the south-west of Bahia, in Brazil's semi-arid interior. The urban centre is modest: a handful of streets around a central square and church, with roads leading out to rural communities and to neighbouring towns in the region. Around it, the land is open and dry for much of the year, with low vegetation, pasture and small cultivated plots.
The name is known in Brazilian geology. The Lagoa Real uranium province, one of the country's main uranium-bearing areas, takes its name from the district. Mining operations there have been part of the regional economy. In daily life, though, the town is mainly agricultural and centred on its surrounding rural communities.
A Lagoa Real map poster is a study in simplicity. The street network occupies only a small part of the frame, and the rest is taken up by tracks, seasonal watercourses and the faint geometry of fields. Streams and small reservoirs in the area fill and shrink with the rains. Where the map shows them, they add soft irregular shapes to the upland.
