Lakhdaria lies in Bouira Province in northern Algeria, on the Isser River where it cuts through the hills on the western side of Kabylie. In colonial times the town was known as Palestro, and the narrow Gorges de Palestro nearby remain its best-known landscape feature.
Because the valley is tight, the main routes all follow the same line. The river, the railway and the East-West Highway run close together through the gorges, and the town spreads along the valley floor and up onto the slopes around it, giving the map a strong, directional shape.
