Lakhīmpur is the headquarters of Lakhimpur Kheri, the largest district in Uttar Pradesh by area, on the plains close to the Nepal border. The land is flat and fertile, crossed by rivers and irrigation channels, and much of it is planted with sugarcane. The town itself is a dense cluster of lanes and markets, surrounded on every side by fields.
The map shows a place that grew gradually rather than to a plan. Narrow streets branch and rejoin around the older commercial centre. A railway line and the main roads cut cleaner lines through this pattern and lead out to nearby towns. Where the town ends, the fine texture of village roads and field boundaries takes over.
The district is best known for Dudhwa National Park, one of India's tiger reserves, which lies to the north near the border.
