Lancaster lies in southern Dallas County, about fifteen miles south of downtown Dallas, on the gently rolling prairie of north Texas. Founded in the 1850s, it grew around a traditional courthouse-style town square, which still sits at the heart of the map. Streets leave the square in a neat grid before giving way to the curving roads of later suburban development.
The town's outer shape is defined by major transport routes. Interstate 35E runs along the western side and Interstate 20 crosses to the north, forming bold boundaries on the map. Lancaster Regional Airport, with its long runway, occupies land to the east. Between these features lie residential neighbourhoods, parks and stretches of open land that still show the area's agricultural past.
