Legionowo lies just north of Warsaw in Mazovia, and its name recalls the Polish Legions, for whom the military garrison at its core was named. From above, the town is a compact grid of streets and apartment blocks surrounded by pine forest, with the railway line to Warsaw running along its edge.
The town grew around barracks and a railway station at the start of the twentieth century, and military grounds still occupy large areas of the map. To the east, the Zegrze Reservoir and the Narew River bring a broad expanse of water within reach, popular for sailing and summer weekends.
