Lerdo de Tejada is a small town in southern Veracruz, on the Gulf of Mexico coastal plain between the Papaloapan lowlands and the volcanic hills of Los Tuxtlas. Its streets follow a neat, regular grid. Blocks of nearly equal size spread out from the centre in every direction until they meet the fields.
The surrounding country is flat, green and wet. Farmland runs up to the edge of town, much of it planted with sugar cane as across this part of Veracruz, and streams, ponds and lagoons are scattered across the plain toward the coast.
