Escaldes-Engordany sits in the heart of Andorra, at the point where the two branches of the Valira river join. The town has grown into one continuous urban strip with Andorra la Vella, and on the map it is hard to tell where one ends and the other begins. Buildings fill the narrow valley floor, and steep, empty slopes rise on either side.
The name refers to warm springs, and thermal water has long been part of the town's identity. Today it is best known for Caldea, the spa complex whose glass spire is one of Andorra's recognisable buildings. The main shopping streets that run along the valley draw many visitors who come to Andorra to shop.
A les Escaldes map poster shows a town with nowhere to spread. The streets run along the rivers, and roads climb in hairpin bends up the valley sides toward the parishes and ski areas. The dense centre lies at the confluence, a sharp V of urban texture enclosed by the mountains.
