Liepāja stretches along a narrow strip of land between the Baltic Sea to the west and Lake Liepāja to the east. The sandy coastline runs almost dead straight, while the lake spreads wide and shallow beside the town. Between them a canal links lake and sea, dividing the city into its older southern part and the districts to the north.
Latvia's third-largest city has long been a port, and its northern edge holds Karosta, a former naval town built under the Russian Empire and later used as a Soviet base. On a map Karosta appears as its own planned grid with harbour basins and breakwaters, set apart from the main city by a second channel.
A Liepāja map poster captures this unusual geometry: open water on both sides, a thin band of streets between them, and long breakwaters reaching into the sea. The seaside park along the dunes forms a soft green edge in real life and a clean gap in black and white.

The trade canal
A canal joins the lake to the sea through the middle of town, lined with quays and crossed by bridges, and it neatly splits the older centre from the northern districts.

To the north, the former naval town has its own grid, harbour basins and long stone breakwaters that extend well out into the Baltic.
