Ligang lies in northern Ningxia, on the flat plain between the Helan Mountains to the west and the Yellow River to the east, between Yinchuan and Shizuishan. The region sits on the edge of the desert, and the map shows how settlement here depends on water. Straight roads, rectangular blocks and farmland are all arranged along irrigation channels.
The Yinchuan plain has been irrigated from the Yellow River for more than two thousand years, and its canal network is among the oldest in China. Around Ligang, these channels and the roads beside them divide the land into long, regular fields. The town itself forms a compact grid of modern blocks and broad streets.
