Liwale lies in the interior of the Lindi region in south-eastern Tanzania, well inland from the coast. It is a remote district town in a sparsely populated area of woodland and wildlife country. The large protected areas of southern Tanzania, including the Nyerere National Park formerly known as the Selous reserve, lie to the north.
On a map Liwale is small and easy to take in. A handful of main roads meet at the town, lined with homes and plots, and short lanes branch off between them. All around, the map is mostly open: miombo woodland, seasonal streams and long unpaved roads leading to distant villages.
