Lohmar lies in the Rhein-Sieg district of North Rhine-Westphalia, between Cologne and Bonn and the hills of the Bergisches Land. It is less a single town than a group of settlements joined together, and on a map it appears as several centres linked by roads through fields and woods, with the Agger river curving through the valley.
To the west lies the Wahner Heide, a large heath and nature reserve next to Cologne Bonn Airport, one of the most important heathland areas in the region. A Lohmar map poster shows the contrast between the open protected land, the wooded hills to the east and the residential streets around the town centre.
In black and white, the rural character becomes the strongest element. Villages sit apart from one another, connected by winding lanes, the river traces its course through the lowland, and the main roads and motorway cut straighter lines across the landscape.
