Lucas is a town in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso, in the vast interior of the country, where distances are long and the land is broad and mostly flat. Mato Grosso is one of Brazil's great agricultural states, a region of savanna, farmland and, to the south-west, the wetlands of the Pantanal. Towns here often began as service centres for the surrounding countryside.
Many settlements in this part of Brazil follow a clear, practical plan, with straight streets laid out across level ground and main roads running out towards farms and neighbouring towns.
