Lübeck's old town sits on an island, enclosed by the River Trave on one side and by the Elbe–Lübeck Canal and old moats on the other. On a map this produces one of the most satisfying shapes in northern Europe: a compact oval with a ladder of streets running down from the central ridge to the water on both sides, linked to the rest of the city by bridges.
As the leading city of the Hanseatic League, Lübeck was a centre of Baltic trade for centuries. Its brick Gothic churches, merchant houses and the twin-towered Holstentor gate are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its marzipan and as the birthplace of Thomas Mann, whose novel Buddenbrooks portrays a Lübeck merchant family.
