Luján lies on the pampas west of Buenos Aires, on the banks of the river that shares its name. It is the country's main pilgrimage site. The neo-Gothic Basilica of Our Lady of Luján, with its two tall spires, stands over the central square, and every year large crowds walk here from the capital.
On the map, Luján follows the classic Argentine pattern of square blocks set out in a regular grid. The river cuts through it in a winding line, with parks and green space along its banks. The main square and the basilica sit at the heart of the plan, and the grid continues outward into newer neighbourhoods and open farmland.
