Lynchburg Map Poster & Print
Lynchburg rises from the south bank of the James River in central Virginia, with the Blue Ridge Mountains on the western horizon. The town began at a ferry crossing run by John Lynch in the eighteenth century and grew as a tobacco market. Its downtown still sits on steep slopes directly above the water.
On a map the old grid near the river runs straight up the hillside, and the streets further out loosen and curve over ridges and around creek valleys. The nickname City of Seven Hills fits what you see from above: the neighbourhoods sit on distinct high points, each with its own cluster of streets, with wooded hollows between them.
Several institutions add large open shapes to the plan, including Liberty University, the University of Lynchburg and Randolph College, each with its own campus of lawns and buildings.
