Macarani sits in the interior of Bahia, close to the border with Minas Gerais, well away from the coast most visitors associate with the state. From above, the town is a tight cluster of blocks, and the roads leaving it thin quickly into rural tracks. The built-up area is small, so the whole of it fits comfortably on one sheet.
The surrounding municipality is mostly farmland, and cattle ranching has long shaped the local economy. On the map this shows as wide, quiet areas broken only by the odd road, watercourse or scattered farm. The contrast between the dense centre and the empty land around it gives the composition a clear focal point without any need for decoration.
