Madalena is a municipality in the interior of Ceará, in north-eastern Brazil, in the semi-arid sertão. The town itself is small, and from above it appears as a modest grid of streets around a central area, with the built-up edge giving way quickly to open land. Beyond it, the map is mostly empty space, crossed by a few roads and many unpaved tracks.
The surrounding landscape is the dry caatinga typical of inland Ceará, where water shapes settlement. Small reservoirs and seasonal streams are common features across the region, and roads link the town to rural communities scattered across the municipality. The simplicity of the layout is part of its appeal on a printed map.
