Madaripur is a district town in Dhaka Division, set on the low, flat land of the Ganges delta south of the capital. Water shapes the landscape around it: rivers, channels and countless ponds break the fields into irregular pieces. The town grew along the banks of the Arial Khan, a distributary that carries water south towards the Bay of Bengal.
From above, the urban core is compact. Its narrow roads bend to follow the waterways rather than any planned grid. Towards the edges the buildings thin out into villages and paddy fields, where footpaths and embankments trace faint lines between the plots. Ponds inside the town add rounded, solid shapes to an otherwise linear pattern.
