Madhepura is the headquarters of Madhepura district in northern Bihar, in the flat alluvial country shaped by the Kosi River and its many shifting channels. From above, the land around the town is dominated by water, with old riverbeds, ponds and drainage lines running through a patchwork of fields. The town is a compact cluster of streets set in the middle of this low, open landscape.
The Kosi is known for changing course over the centuries, and its floods have shaped settlement across the region. Madhepura's street network is irregular, with a dense central market area and residential lanes spreading outward along the main roads. The town is home to Bhupendra Narayan Mandal University, which gives it a role as an educational centre for the surrounding districts.
