Māhān lies in Kerman province in south-eastern Iran, a short distance from the city of Kerman. It sits at the edge of the mountains, where the land slopes down towards the desert, and from above the town appears as a compact cluster of streets surrounded by orchards, gardens and dry open land.
The town is known for the shrine of Shah Nematollah Vali, a Sufi poet and mystic, whose domed complex stands at its centre. Nearby lies the Shazdeh Garden, a terraced Persian garden with cascading water channels, which is part of the UNESCO-listed Persian Garden site.
