Malārd lies in Tehran Province, on the broad plain to the west of the Iranian capital. The land here is flat, and the city's map reflects that: streets spread outwards evenly, with a mix of regular blocks and older, more irregular quarters. Main roads connect it to Tehran and neighbouring towns, forming clear axes through the plan.
The area around Malārd has long been agricultural, and fields and orchards still surround much of the built-up area, giving the map an open setting. In recent decades the city has grown considerably as part of the wider Tehran metropolitan region, and newer neighbourhoods show more planned, rectangular layouts than the older core.
To the north, the plain rises gradually towards the Alborz foothills, although the city itself remains on level ground.
