Mālūr lies on the dry, gently rolling plateau east of Bengaluru, in Kolar district. The town is compact. Its older lanes cluster close together, and newer streets stretch out along the main roads. A railway line passes through the town, and on the map it cuts a long, steady diagonal that ties Mālūr into the wider network of southern Karnataka.
The countryside around the town is a mix of farmland and small settlements. Irrigation tanks are common across this part of the state, and they show up as irregular pale shapes among the fields. Mālūr is known locally for its brick and tile making. Its industrial areas sit along the approach roads, where the street pattern becomes looser and more spread out.
