Manāsa is a town in Neemuch district, in the north-western corner of Madhya Pradesh, close to the border with Rajasthan. It lies on the Malwa plateau, a broad upland of fertile black soil, and the land around it is flat and intensively farmed. From above, the town forms a compact cluster of streets surrounded by a patchwork of fields.
The Neemuch and Mandsaur area is one of the few parts of India where licensed opium poppy cultivation takes place. Farmers here also grow crops such as soybean, wheat and garlic. Manāsa is a local market and administrative centre, and roads from nearby villages converge on its bazaar streets.
