Māndalgarh is a town in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, in the historic Mewar region. It is best known for its fort, which crowns a hill above the town. Its walls follow the edge of the high ground, a strategic position used for centuries by the rulers who fought over this frontier.
On a map, the relationship between hill and town is the defining feature. The older streets gather close to the base of the fort, narrow and irregular, while the fort's own paths and enclosures sit apart on the high ground. Beyond, roads strike out across the rocky, semi-arid countryside towards the surrounding villages.
