Mangalam is in western Tamil Nadu, just west of Tiruppur, in the Kongu region between Coimbatore and Erode. From above, the town lies on flat, dry land. A cluster of older streets surrounds the central area, and newer houses and small industrial buildings spread along the roads that lead out towards Tiruppur and the villages around it.
The area around Tiruppur is one of India's largest centres for knitwear and garment production, and that influence reaches Mangalam. On a map, the mix of residential lanes, larger workshop and factory plots, and farmland between them shows a place that is partly village and partly an extension of the textile economy.
