Manhattan Beach lies in the South Bay of Los Angeles County, between El Segundo and Hermosa Beach. Its map is shaped by the ocean: a straight coastline, a pedestrian path called the Strand running along the sand, and a concrete pier with a small round building at its end. Behind the beach the grid climbs uphill, with streets aligned to face the sea.
Near the beach, many blocks are divided by walk streets, narrow pedestrian lanes lined with houses and gardens, which show up clearly as fine lines between the roads. Further east, Sepulveda Boulevard and the larger residential areas form a more conventional grid. Sand Dune Park, a steep natural dune, is a well-known training spot among locals.
