Mankono is the capital of the Béré Region, in the Woroba District of north-central and western Ivory Coast. The town sits in wooded savanna, a transitional landscape between the forest zone to the south and the drier north. From above, the settlement has a clear core. Its streets thin out towards the edges, where plots give way to farmland and scrub.
The regional roads leading into town act as the map’s main structure. The rest of the street network fills in between them in irregular blocks, and the pattern loosens with distance from the centre. There is no coastline or major river to frame the town. What gives the map its character is the contrast between the dense middle and the sparse, open land around it.
