Mannachanallur lies in Tiruchirappalli district of Tamil Nadu, north of Trichy and across the Kollidam, the northern arm of the Kaveri. The land is flat, watered delta country, and the map shows a town surrounded on almost every side by paddy fields and the canals that feed them.
The town is widely associated with rice, especially the Ponni variety, and its economy centres on milling and trade. Large mill compounds and drying yards line the approach roads, and their broad rectangular footprints stand out from the dense residential streets closer to the centre, where temples and markets are grouped together.
