Mannargudi lies in the fertile Cauvery delta of Tamil Nadu, in a flat landscape of rice fields crossed by irrigation channels. On a map, the town is centred on its large temple complex, around which streets are laid out in the rectangular pattern typical of many South Indian temple towns.
The Rajagopalaswamy Temple, dedicated to Vishnu, occupies a substantial walled enclosure near the centre. Close by lies its large temple tank, known as Haridra Nadhi, which appears on the map as a wide area of water inside the town. Streets encircle the temple and lead outward toward the surrounding delta.
