Mapo is a town in the north of Jiangsu province, in the Xuzhou area close to the border with Shandong. The surrounding landscape belongs to the broad, low plain of northern Jiangsu, and the map shows a compact settlement with a few main roads crossing near its centre and farmland stretching out in every direction.
Its streets are mostly straight, arranged in a simple pattern that has expanded along the principal roads as the town has grown. Villages sit around it in small, dense clusters, linked by rural lanes and separated by fields. With no hills or coastline to dominate the view, the character of the map comes from rhythm and repetition.
