Matipó lies in the Zona da Mata of eastern Minas Gerais, a region of rounded hills, narrow valleys and farmland long associated with coffee growing. On the map the town follows the valley floor, where the land is flat enough to build, while the slopes around it stay largely open.
That terrain shapes the plan. Main streets run along the valley, and side streets climb short distances before the ground gets too steep. A Matipó map poster reflects this: an elongated town with a stream running through or beside it and rural roads winding into the hills.
