Meinerzhagen sits high in the Sauerland in the Märkischer Kreis, and its map is governed by terrain. Streets follow valley floors and hillside contours rather than straight lines, bending around ridges and climbing in switchbacks. The town centre occupies a relatively compact area of gentler ground, while outlying villages sit in the folds of the hills, each connected by a single winding road.
The Volme rises near the town and flows away toward Hagen, and several reservoirs in the surrounding valleys appear on the poster as irregular, branching shapes of water. Dense forest covers much of the land between settlements, which on a black and white map produces large quiet areas that make the roads and villages stand out clearly.
The Sauerland motorway, the A45, passes close to the town, cutting a long, smooth line across the hills that contrasts with the older local roads.
