Mekla is in Tizi Ouzou province in Kabylie, in northern Algeria, in the hilly country around the Sebaou valley. The terrain sets the shape of the town. Streets follow slopes and ridgelines instead of a grid, so the map has flowing, contour-like lines that are typical of the region.
Below the town, the valley floor opens out into flatter land, and the roads find easier routes there. Up on the slopes, settlement becomes more scattered, with villages and hamlets linked by winding roads. This contrast between valley and hillside is what the map shows most clearly.
