Mellit is a town in North Darfur, Sudan, north of El Fasher, in the dry country where the Sahel shades into the desert. On a map the town is low and spread out. Compounds and lanes cluster around a central market, and the edges fade gradually into open ground.
Mellit has long been a market town and a stop on routes heading north through Darfur. Tracks and roads leave it in several directions across flat, sandy land where there are few fixed features to break up the view.
Seasonal watercourses, dry for much of the year, cross parts of the surrounding land and appear on the map as faint lines. A Mellit map poster is spare by nature: a small, dense centre in a wide landscape, drawn in the same simple lines that people use to find their way across it.
