Mettmann sits on rolling ground east of Düsseldorf, where the flat Rhine plain begins to rise into the hills of the Bergisches Land. On a map the town looks compact, with an older core of short, winding streets on higher ground and newer residential areas spreading outward along ridges and gentle slopes, interrupted by fields and patches of woodland.
The town's best-known neighbour is the Neandertal, the valley of the small Düssel river just south of the centre. In 1856 quarry workers there found the fossil bones that gave their name to Neanderthal man, and the Neanderthal Museum now stands in the valley. Mettmann is also the administrative seat of the district that carries its name.
A Mettmann map poster shows how the town is held between different landscapes: dense streets in the centre, the narrow green cut of the valley to the south, and open farmland toward the east. Roads curve to follow the terrain rather than a grid, which gives the map a soft, organic feel even in its more built-up parts.
