Middletown sits on the west bank of the Connecticut River, roughly midway between Hartford and the coast, where the river makes a sharp turn to the southeast. In the eighteenth century it was one of the busiest ports in Connecticut. Its Main Street is notably wide, a long straight spine running parallel to the river through the downtown.
Middletown is home to Wesleyan University, founded in 1831, whose campus occupies the rising ground west of downtown, with Foss Hill and a green field at its centre. On a map, the Arrigoni Bridge stands out, carrying the road across the river to Portland. Neighbourhoods spread west and south into hills, with parks and reservoirs among them.
