Miguel Calmon is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, far from the Atlantic coast, in a landscape of hills, ridges and seasonal watercourses. The town itself is compact. A central area of short streets and small squares spreads out along the easier ground between the slopes. From above, the built-up area follows the terrain instead of a fixed grid, and so its edges look irregular.
Roads out of town follow valleys and ridgelines, and rural tracks branch off toward farms and smaller settlements. Around the town, the map is mostly open terrain, crossed by the thin lines of streams that fill in the rainy season and shrink in the dry months. The contrast between the dense centre and the wide surrounding land is the main feature of the composition.
