Miliana stands on a shelf on the southern slopes of Mount Zaccar in northern Algeria, high above the valley of the Chelif. On the map the town is a compact cluster on the hillside, with roads climbing up to it in tight bends from the plain. Above, the streets thin out into steep ground; below, farmland spreads across the valley floor.
The site has been inhabited since antiquity, when the Roman town of Zucchabar stood here. In the 1830s Miliana was one of the bases of Emir Abdelkader during the resistance to French occupation. The surrounding slopes are known for orchards, particularly cherries, and water from the mountain has long supplied the gardens.
