Mirano lies in the Metropolitan City of Venice, on the flat, fertile plain between Padua and the lagoon. From above, its centre reads as an elongated core rather than a round old town, with the main square and its connecting streets stretched along the course of a small river. Around this spine, residential neighbourhoods spread out in a looser pattern, broken up by gardens, fields and the green grounds of historic villas.
Like much of this part of the Veneto, Mirano grew as a place where Venetian families built country residences, and several villas with parks survive. The best known is Villa Belvedere, whose landscaped park lies close to the centre and is open to the public. Canals and irrigation channels cross the surrounding countryside, adding thin lines of water to the plan.
The result is a gentle, well-balanced composition.
