Missão Velha lies in the Cariri region of southern Ceará, near the larger cities of Juazeiro do Norte and Crato. Its name, meaning old mission, refers to its colonial-era origins. On the map, the town centre forms a compact grid, and roads lead out across a landscape of farmland, low ridges and seasonal watercourses.
The municipality is known for the Missão Velha waterfall, part of the Araripe Geopark, which is recognised by UNESCO for its fossil beds and geology. The Cariri itself is greener than much of the surrounding sertão because of water that flows from the Araripe plateau, and that difference shows in the denser pattern of farms and tracks around the town.
