Morshansk lies in the north of Tambov Oblast, on the Tsna river, which winds past the town through a low, open valley. On a map, the centre shows the regular block pattern typical of many Russian provincial towns that were replanned in the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The town grew as a river port and trading centre for grain, and later became known for tobacco production. The large Trinity Cathedral, which rises above the centre, is its best-known building and a reference point for any walk through the older streets.
