Tula lies on the Upa River, about 180 kilometres south of Moscow. From above, the centre is anchored by the kremlin, a rectangle of brick walls and towers built in the early sixteenth century to guard the southern approaches to Moscow. Main streets radiate from this core. The Upa winds past to the north and east, curving through low ground that has kept much of the riverside open.
Industry shaped much of the rest of the map. Tula has been known for gunsmithing since the days of Peter the Great, and large factory sites occupy long stretches along the river. Beyond them, residential districts from the Soviet period spread out in large, regular blocks, and parks and wooded areas break up the southern districts.
A Tula map poster connects the city's familiar symbols: samovars, the printed pryanik gingerbread, and the arms works. Yasnaya Polyana, the estate where Leo Tolstoy lived and wrote, lies just south of the city.
